Privacy Policy - ScreenWho

Last updated: June 17, 2026

ScreenWho ("the app", "we", "us") helps you identify actors and characters on a TV or movie screen by pointing your phone's camera at it. This Privacy Policy explains what data the app processes, how, and your choices. By using ScreenWho you agree to this policy.

Plain-language summary: ScreenWho uses your camera to detect faces on a screen. When a face is detected, a cropped image is sent to our server, which uses third-party recognition services (Amazon Web Services and OpenAI) to identify the actor. We do not create accounts, we do not sell your data, and we do not knowingly store the face images you scan beyond the time needed to return a result unless you explicitly choose to send an optional cropped-face diagnostic after reporting a wrong result.

1. Data we process

a) Camera images and face data

b) Recognition results and history

Identification results such as actor name, character, show or film, and notable roles are stored locally on your device as scan history, capped at the most recent 100 entries. This history never leaves your device unless you choose to share it.

c) Technical data

d) Optional feedback diagnostics

We do not collect your name, email, contacts, or precise location. We do not use device identifiers for advertising or cross-app tracking.

2. How we use the data

We do not use your data for advertising, and we do not sell or rent personal data.

3. Third-party services

Provider Purpose What is shared
Amazon Web Services (AWS Rekognition, Lambda, DynamoDB, S3) Primary face recognition, hosting, feedback metadata storage in DynamoDB, and private diagnostic crop storage in S3 Cropped face image or frame for recognition; feedback metadata, per-install device identifier, and optional diagnostic cropped face image when you opt in
OpenAI (GPT-4o Vision) Fallback identification when AWS recognition is uncertain Cropped face image or frame
The Movie Database (TMDB) Actor biography and filmography lookup Actor identifier only, no image

Each provider processes the data under its own terms and privacy policy. We share only what is necessary to perform the identification.

4. Data retention

5. Your choices and rights

Depending on your region, such as the EEA, UK, or California, you may have additional rights such as access, deletion, or objection. Contact us to exercise them.

6. Children's privacy

ScreenWho is not directed to children under 13 or the minimum age in your jurisdiction. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children.

7. Security

We use industry-standard measures, including encrypted transport over HTTPS and access controls, to protect data in transit and on our servers. No method of transmission or storage is 100% secure, but we work to protect your information.

8. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, an in-app notice.
